Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1938, he was an investment banker, historian and politician. Lehrman was a senior partner at L.
E. Lehrman & Co., the investment firm he established in 1981, and chairman of the Lehrman Institute, a public policy research and grant-making foundation founded in 1972. He also wrote for the Lincoln Institute. In 2005, President George W. Bush awarded him the National Humanities Medal for contributions to American history, Abraham Lincoln scholarship and monetary policy.
