Leïla Marouane Tunisian-born French creative writer and journalist dead at age 65

Leïla Marouane, a Tunisian-born French creative writer and journalist who wrote for El Watan and Jeune Afrique, died on April 8, 2026.

She was 65. Born Leyla Zineb Mechentel in 1960 in Djerba, Tunisia, Marouane worked as a journalist for Horizons and El Watan before later writing for Politis, Jeune Afrique and the German-language press.

She was also an author of novels and short fiction and used the pseudonym Leïla Marouane.
