
Roger Establet, the French educational sociologist, died on April 8, 2026, aged 87 or 88.
Born in 1938, he was a scholar of the sociology of education and an emeritus professor at the University of Provence. A student of Louis Althusser, he entered the École normale supérieure in 1959 after studying at the lycée in Nice and at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris, where he earned degrees in philosophy and sociology.
He also collaborated often with Christian Baudelot and took part in Althusser’s Reading Capital project.
