Born in Hamilton, he played centre and represented Canada at the 1956 and 1960 Winter Olympics. Laufman was a member of the Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen when the team won bronze for Canada in 1956 and silver in 1960.
He also played for the Guelph Biltmores, Halifax Atlantics, Johnstown Jets and Portland Buckaroos, appearing in 54 games in the Ontario Hockey Association, 132 in the Eastern Hockey League and 83 in the Western Hockey League.
