Born Judith Lee Clavir in Toronto on June 25, 1943, she became involved in the 1960s counterculture and anti-war movement after moving to Berkeley in 1967. Gumbo worked at the underground newspaper Berkeley Barb and helped found its offshoot, Berkeley Tribe.
She was also known as Judy Clavir Albert and Judy Gumbo Albert, and was married to Stew Albert, David Hemblen and Arthur Eckstein.
