Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on February 19, 1933, he became an authority on American arts and antiques and helped establish the American Decorative Arts and Sculpture department at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Fairbanks served as curator of that department from 1970 to 1999.
He studied at the University of Utah, the University of Pennsylvania School of Design and the University of Delaware, and was named a Fellow of the American Craft Council. He was the son of sculptor Avard Fairbanks.
