Born in Chilliwack on October 27, 1947, he represented the Social Credit Party in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1986 to 1991. During that period, he served under premiers Bill Vander Zalm and Rita Johnston, holding cabinet portfolios that included health, finance and corporate relations, international business and immigration, and responsibility for seniors.

Jansen also served as mayor of Chilliwack in the 1980s and later was president of the Chilliwack Hospital Foundation.
