Alan Mandell, a Canadian–American actor, died October 13, 2026, aged 98, in Westwood, Los Angeles.

Born Albert Mandell on December 27, 1927, in Toronto, he performed on stages in Canada and the United States and established a reputation in San Francisco’s theater scene during the 1950s. In 1968, he legally changed his given name to Alan to avoid confusion with mobster Albert Anastasia.

Mandell’s association with Samuel Beckett began in 1957, when he appeared in Waiting for Godot at the San Francisco Actor’s Workshop. He later played Lucky in a production of the play directed by Beckett himself. Across several decades of stage work, Mandell became especially acclaimed as an interpreter of Beckett’s writing, with his career linking the San Francisco theater community to productions of the playwright’s work. His screen credits included the television series Grey’s Anatomy and the film The Marrying Man. A wider film audience knew him as Rabbi Marshak in the Coen brothers’ 2009 film A Serious Man. He was married to Elizabeth Heller Mandell.
