John Anderson, the American baseball player and coach who built a long career with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, died on July 26, 2026, of a heart attack.

Born in Hibbing, Minnesota, on May 16, 1955, Anderson played college baseball at Minnesota from 1974 to 1975 before an arm injury ended his pitching career. He remained with the program as a student coach, later joined the staff as an assistant and became head coach in 1981 at age 26, the youngest in Big Ten history at the time.

Over nearly four decades leading the Golden Gophers, he guided the team to 1,317 wins, 887 losses and three ties through the 2019 season.
