Harry Shorstein, an American lawyer and former Florida state attorney, died in Jacksonville on October 23, 2026, aged 86.

Born in Jacksonville on August 3, 1940, he grew up in the city and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School.

He attended the University of Florida, where he earned bachelor’s and law degrees, and was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1965. Shorstein served in Vietnam as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. His decorations included the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V,” the Combat Action Ribbon, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and a Presidential Unit Citation. In 1991, Gov. Lawton Chiles appointed him State Attorney for Florida’s Fourth Judicial Circuit, which includes Duval, Clay and Nassau counties. The appointment filled the term left vacant by Ed Austin, who resigned to run successfully for mayor of Jacksonville. A Democrat, Shorstein won election to a full term in 1992 and was re-elected in 1996; he ran unopposed in 2000 and 2004. At a news conference in February 2007, he announced he would not seek re-election the following year. After leaving the office in 2008, he returned to private practice. Angela Corey succeeded him as State Attorney.
