Parvez Butt, the Pakistani mechanical engineer who chaired the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission from 2001 to 2006, died on July 26, 2026, at the age of 83.

Born in Gujranwala on October 4, 1942, he was closely associated with Pakistan’s nuclear power sector throughout his career. Butt studied mechanical engineering at the University of Engineering and Technology in Lahore, graduating in 1962, and later pursued higher studies in engineering at the University of Toronto.

He spent much of his working life in the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission’s nuclear power division before leading the agency, and later served in government as a science policy adviser and as an adviser on nuclear energy at the Planning Commission.
