Born in Jalandhar, British India, he played as a forward for Pakistan from 1958 to 1966 and appeared in 56 international matches, scoring 26 goals. After his playing career, he went on to serve Pakistan hockey as a coach, chief selector and manager at different times.

In 2009, he received Pakistan’s Pride of Performance award. He was also known as Khawaja Zakauddin.
