Carl Berger, a Canadian historian and academic, died October 1, 2026, aged 87.

Born in The Pas, Manitoba, Berger studied at the University of Manitoba, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1961, then completed master’s and doctoral degrees at the University of Toronto. He joined the Toronto faculty in 1964 and taught Canadian history there until retiring in 2003.

His scholarship focused on Canadian intellectual history and the writing of Canadian history, a field he helped bring into sustained study. His 1976 book, The Writing of Canadian History, was the first in-depth study of Canadian historiography and received the Governor General’s Award for English-language non-fiction. Berger also received the J. B. Tyrrell Historical Medal. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, he supervised doctoral students who went on to become prominent Canadian historians, including Gerald Friesen, Doug Owram and Brook Taylor. His work examined how Canadians had interpreted and written their history, while his teaching and supervision connected that inquiry to generations of scholars. Berger completed his PhD in 1967 under the supervision of historian Maurice Careless. His career at the University of Toronto spanned nearly four decades, from his appointment in 1964 through his retirement in 2003.
