Anwar Shaikh, a Pakistani-born American heterodox economist, died October 6, 2026, aged 80.
Born in Karachi, then part of British India, he was also known as Anwar Mir Mohammed Shaikh and worked in the tradition of classical political economy and Marxian economics. Shaikh was a professor of economics in the Graduate Faculty of Social and Political Science at The New School for Social Research in New York City, where he taught from 1972.
His academic education included Princeton University and Columbia University. His early life spanned several countries because his father worked in Pakistan’s Foreign Service. Shaikh lived for periods in Ankara, Washington, New York, Lagos, Kuala Lumpur and Kuwait, experiences that made his upbringing unusually international. In Ankara, he attended a French school from age six; later, in Karachi, he studied at St. Patrick’s High School. His family was described as a liberal Muslim-Christian Sindhi family. Across a career based at The New School, Shaikh’s teaching and intellectual work remained connected to the heterodox study of political economy. His biography brought together a Pakistani birthplace and Sindhi background with an academic life in the United States, where he spent decades teaching economics in New York.
