
Jack Bass, an American author and journalist, died on April 23, 2026, at age 91.
He was born in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1934 and grew up in North as the youngest of seven children. Bass graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1956 with a degree in journalism and served in the U.S.
Navy after attending officer’s candidate school in Newport, Rhode Island. He later worked as a journalist in Charleston and as Columbia bureau chief for The Charlotte Observer from 1966 to 1973. Bass also taught journalism at the University of South Carolina, the University of Mississippi and the College of Charleston.
