Ivan Rebernik Slovenian diplomat dead at age 86

Ivan Rebernik, a Slovenian diplomat and librarian, died on April 16, 2026, at the age of 86.

He served as Slovenia’s ambassador to the Vatican and as Chancellor of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. Born in Maribor on October 7, 1939, Rebernik earned a bachelor’s degree in theology and a doctorate in philosophy from the Pontifical Gregorian University.

In 1984, he studied the administration of an automated library as a visiting expert at the Smithsonian Institution and at the Catholic University of America. He spoke Slovene, English, Italian, Serbo-Croatian, German, Russian, French and Spanish.
