Herbert Sukopp

Herbert Sukopp, a German ecologist and academic, died on February 7, 2026.

Born in Berlin on November 6, 1930, he earned his doctorate from the Free University of Berlin in 1958 under Erich Werdermann and completed his habilitation in botany in 1968. He became a professor at Technische Universität Berlin in 1969 and, from 1974 to 1996, served as professor and head of the department of Ecosystem Research and Vegetation Science at the Institute of Ecology.

Sukopp was noted as the founder of the Berlin School of urban ecology and was honorary president of the Society for Urban Ecology.

Herbert Sukopp (6 November 1930 – 3 February 2026) was a German ecologist. From 1974 to 1996 he was professor and head of the department of Ecosystem Research and Vegetation Science at the Institute of Ecology at the Technische Universität Berlin.
