Beresford Parlett English applied mathematician dead at age 93

Beresford Parlett, an English applied mathematician, died on February 7, 2026, at the age of 93.

Born in London on July 4, 1932, he specialized in numerical analysis and scientific computation. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Oxford in 1955, worked in his father’s timber business for three years, and then studied at Stanford University, where he received his Ph.D.

in 1962. Parlett later held postdoctoral appointments at the Courant Institute and the Stevens Institute of Technology, and wrote influential papers on eigenvalue problems, the QR algorithm, the Lanczos algorithm, symmetric indefinite systems and sparse matrix computations.

Beresford Neill Parlett (July 4, 1932 – February 7, 2026) was an English applied mathematician, who specialised in numerical analysis and scientific computation.
