Wood, an American historian whose books included The Radicalism of the American Revolution and Empire of Liberty: A History of the Early Republic, 1789–1815, died on June 7, 2026, after being struck by a vehicle. He was 92.

Born Gordon Stewart Wood in Concord, Mass., he taught at Brown University and also held appointments at Harvard University, the University of Michigan, the University of Cambridge and the College of William & Mary. A graduate of Tufts University, he later earned advanced degrees from Harvard and won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for History for The Radicalism of the American Revolution. His honors also included the Bancroft Prize and the National Humanities Medal.
