A native of Walpole, Massachusetts, Morgan was a graduate of Walpole High School and went on to Boston College, where he played baseball and hockey. He later signed his first professional baseball contract in 1952 and reached the major leagues in 1959 after military service and time in the minors.
Over the course of his baseball career, he served as an infielder, coach, scout and manager in Major League Baseball, and was associated as a player with the Cleveland Indians and St. Louis Cardinals and as a manager with the Boston Red Sox.
