Mojares, a Filipino author, historian and literary critic, died on September 5, 2026, aged 83. Born Resil Buagas Mojares on September 4, 1943, in Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte, he became one of the country’s leading figures in the study of Philippine history and literature.
He was widely known for his books on Philippine history and for his influence on Visayan letters, earning recognition from writers and critics who called him the Visayan Titan of Letters. In 2018, he was named a National Artist of the Philippines for Literature, the country’s highest state honor for artists. Mojares studied at the University of San Carlos and the University of the Philippines, and later taught or worked at institutions including Kyoto University, the University of California, Los Angeles, the National University of Singapore and the University of San Carlos.
