Born Felton James Earls in New Orleans in January 1942, he was known for his work in social medicine and for a long-term study examining how neighbors’ willingness to help one another could influence neighborhood crime rates. Earls served as professor of social medicine emeritus at Harvard Medical School and professor of human behavior and development emeritus at the Harvard T.H.
Chan School of Public Health. He had also been the Blanche F. Ittleson Professor of Child Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
