Carlos Brito Portuguese politician dead at age 93

Carlos Brito, a Portuguese politician, died on May 7, 2026, at the age of 93.

Born in Portuguese Mozambique on February 9, 1933, he moved with his family to Alcoutim, in the Algarve, when he was 3. He joined the illegal Portuguese Communist Party during the New State regime and was imprisoned by the authorities.

In the 1980 presidential election, he was the Communist Party candidate but withdrew shortly before the vote in support of incumbent President António Ramalho Eanes. Brito served in the Assembly of the Republic until 1991.
