
Buzz Capra, an American baseball player who pitched for the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves, died on May 11, 2026, at age 78.
Born Lee William Capra on October 1, 1947, he played in Major League Baseball from 1971 to 1977. Nicknamed Buzz as a child, he was a National League All-Star and the league’s earned run average leader in 1974.
Capra played shortstop at Lane Technical College Prep High School in Chicago before beginning to pitch at Illinois State University, where he went 17–5 with a 1.58 ERA and helped lead the Redbirds to the 1969 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship. He was selected by the Mets in the 1969 MLB draft.
