Jimmy Rimmer, the English footballer who served as a goalkeeper for Manchester United, Swansea City, Arsenal and Aston Villa, died on August 14, 2026, aged 78.
Born John James Rimmer in Southport, he joined Manchester United as a schoolboy in 1963 and turned professional two years later, spending 11 years at Old Trafford largely as understudy to Alex Stepney. He was on the bench for the club’s 1968 European Cup final victory and made 46 first-team appearances before a loan spell at Swansea City in October 1973.
Arsenal signed him in February 1974 as a long-term replacement for Bob Wilson, and he later became closely associated with Aston Villa, with whom he won two European Cup winners’ medals.
