Skip Bertman, the American baseball player and coach who became one of Louisiana State University’s most accomplished athletic figures, died on August 14, 2026, aged 88.
Born Stanley Bertman in Detroit and known widely as “Skip,” he played college baseball at the University of Miami as an outfielder and catcher from 1958 to 1960 before later building a distinguished coaching career. At LSU, he guided the Tigers for 18 seasons, winning five College World Series titles and seven Southeastern Conference championships.
He finished with 870 wins, 330 losses and three ties, and his .754 winning percentage in NCAA tournament play remained the highest in college baseball history. Bertman also served as LSU’s athletic director.
