Brian Rotman, a British academic who worked in the United States, died on April 10, 2026, at the age of 87.
Born in London in 1938, he studied mathematics at the University of Nottingham and later taught at Bristol University for 20 years after positions at a grammar school and a technical college. He went on to become a distinguished humanities professor in the department of comparative studies at Ohio State University and also taught at Stanford.
Rotman’s work and teaching drew on mathematics, philosophy and the history of writing, and he gave lectures at universities including Berkeley, MIT, Brown, Duke, Notre Dame, Penn State, Minnesota and Cornell.
