Eliot Engel, an American politician and member of the U.S.

House of Representatives from 1989 to 2021, died on April 10, 2026, at the age of 79. A Democrat, he represented parts of the north Bronx and southern Westchester County in New York.

Engel won his first congressional election in 1988, defeating Mario Biaggi in the Democratic primary, and later served as chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee in 2019 after previously serving as ranking member from 2013. He was defeated in the 2020 Democratic primary by middle school principal Jamaal Bowman after 16 terms in office.
