Billy Álvarez, the Mexican football executive who served as president of Cruz Azul from 1988 to 2020 and later was identified as a convicted criminal, died on May 30, 2026.
He was 80. Born Guillermo Héctor Álvarez Cuevas on September 8, 1945, in Jasso, Hidalgo, Mexico, he was the son of Guillermo Álvarez Macías, the founder and first general director of the Cruz Azul cooperative.
Álvarez also worked as a footballer and was the longtime director of Cooperativa La Cruz Azul, a role that placed him at the center of one of Mexico’s best-known football institutions.
