Nicolae Ungureanu, the Romanian footballer and manager best known for his work with Universitatea Craiova, the national team and Drobeta-Turnu Severin, died on August 28, 2026, aged 69.
Born in Craiova on October 11, 1956, he played as a defender and was capped 56 times for Romania, scoring once. His international career included a debut in April 1981 against Israel, a role in the 1984 European Championship qualifying campaign, and appearances in all three of Romania’s matches at the final tournament under Mircea Lucescu.
After his playing career, he moved into coaching, beginning as a player-coach at Pandurii Târgu Jiu in the 1993–94 Divizia C season and later taking charge of Electroputere Craiova, FC Universitatea Craiova and Pandurii in the top flight.
