Terry Matthews, the English footballer who played for Aldershot, Gillingham and West Ham United, died on August 27, 2026, aged 90.
Born George Terence Leonard Matthews in Leyton on 25 February 1936, he came through Hackney and Middlesex Schools before joining West Ham United as a youth and signing professional forms in August 1952. He made his senior debut in October 1953 in an Essex Professional Cup defeat by Colchester United, and later took his place in the Football League with a second-division appearance against Blackburn Rovers in March 1956, in which he scored West Ham’s only goal.
After his playing career, he went on to manage non-League sides Aveley, Tilbury and Walthamstow Avenue.
