Born Richard Garnet Rowland in Cloverdale, California, he attended Mendocino College before beginning a professional career that stretched through the late 1980s and 1990s. In the majors, he worked primarily as a backup catcher from 1990 to 1995, while also making occasional appearances as a designated hitter, first baseman, third baseman and pinch runner.
