He was 91. Born in London on August 30, 1934, Rabinowitch earned his bachelor’s degree at Knox College, his master’s at the University of Chicago and his doctorate at Indiana University Bloomington.
He taught at Indiana University from 1968 until 1999 and later served as professor emeritus of history there. From 2013, he was also an affiliated research scholar at the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences. His work included books such as The Bolsheviks Survive and studies of the Soviet system.
