Born Anthony Alexander Johnson in Loughborough, Leicestershire, he was a right-handed batsman and right-arm fast-medium bowler. He made his first-class debut for Nottinghamshire against Surrey in the 1963 County Championship and went on to play 25 further first-class matches for the county, with his final appearance coming against Kent in 1966.

Johnson later moved into minor counties cricket with Northumberland, making his debut for the side in 1970, and also appeared for Durham in 1973.
