Todd Benzinger, an American baseball player and 1990 World Series champion, died October 21, 2026, aged 63.
Born Todd Eric Benzinger in Dayton, Kentucky, on February 11, 1963, he graduated from New Richmond High School in New Richmond, Ohio. A first baseman and outfielder, he played nine seasons in Major League Baseball, from 1987 through 1995.
Benzinger began his major-league career with the Boston Red Sox and later played for the Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants. During Boston’s 1988 “Morgan Magic” run, he hit a 10th-inning walk-off home run on July 20, a game some Red Sox enthusiasts called “The Benzinger Game.” The following year, he ended Orel Hershiser’s scoreless-inning streak at 59 with an RBI hit in the first inning of Hershiser’s first start of the season. Benzinger joined the Reds and was part of their 1990 World Series championship team. He concluded his professional playing career in 1995 with the Columbus Clippers, then a minor-league affiliate of the Cleveland organization. His major-league career spanned five teams and included roles as both an infielder at first base and an outfielder.
