Alan Brown, an English cricketer who represented Kent and England, died on October 16, 2026, aged 90.
Born in Rainworth, Nottinghamshire, on October 17, 1935, he established himself as a fast bowler and made his first-class debut for Kent against Cambridge University in 1957. He played county cricket for Kent through 1970, becoming the club’s main strike bowler, and was awarded his county cap in 1961.
In 1965, he took 100 wickets. Brown played two Test matches for England in 1961, against Pakistan and India, during a tour that also included Ceylon. The tour came when England’s regular pace bowlers, including Fred Trueman and Brian Statham, had declined to travel. Brown made an effective start against Pakistan, taking three wickets for 27 runs in the second innings as England won by five wickets. In the match against India in Bombay, which ended in a draw, he did not take a wicket. The tour’s flat pitches proved poorly suited to his fast-bowling style. His international appearances were brief, while his longer contribution came with Kent, where he played regularly across 14 seasons and reached the milestone of 100 wickets in a county season.
