Griffith, an American academic and professor of Early Christian Studies at the Catholic University of America, died on July 19, 2026. Born on January 1, 1938, Griffith spent much of his career examining Arabic Christianity, Syriac monasticism, medieval Christian-Muslim encounters, and ecumenical and interfaith dialogue.
He began his path in Catholic scholarship after being ordained a priest in 1965, later earning a licentiate in theology from the Catholic University of America in 1967 and a Ph.D. from the same institution in 1977. After completing his doctorate, he joined the university’s teaching faculty and later served as director of its Graduate Program in Early Christian Studies. He also served on the advisory board of Collectanea Christiana Orientalia and delivered guest lectures at academic institutions.
