
Sir Neil Cossons OBE FSA FMA, a British historian and museum administrator, died on March 29, 2026, aged 87.
Born in Beeston, Nottinghamshire, on January 15, 1939, he studied at the University of Liverpool. He was the first director of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust from 1971, then served at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich from 1983.
From 1986 to 2000, he was director of the Science Museum in London. He was also an English Heritage commissioner from 1989 to 1995 and again from 1999 to 2000, and later served as pro-provost and chairman of council at the Royal College of Art from 2007.
