Liamine Zéroual, an Algerian politician who served as president from 1994 to 1999 and as minister of defense from 1993 to 1999, died on March 28, 2026, at the age of 84.
Born in Batna on July 3, 1941, he joined the National Liberation Army in 1957 and later held a series of military posts after Algeria’s independence. He was appointed minister of defense in July 1993, became head of the High Council of State in January 1994, and served as Algeria’s sixth president from January 31, 1994, to April 27, 1999.
