Born in Batna on July 3, 1941, he joined the National Liberation Army in 1957 and later held a series of military posts after Algeria’s independence. He was appointed minister of defense in July 1993, became head of the High Council of State in January 1994, and served as Algeria’s sixth president from January 31, 1994, to April 27, 1999.
