Born María Nieves Rego in Buenos Aires on September 6, 1934, she grew up in the Saavedra district as the daughter of modest Galician emigrants. After her father died, she left school in the fourth grade to work as a maid in La Boca.

Introduced to tango by her elder sister, known as La Ñata, she began dancing with Juan Carlos Copes at age 14. The pair later starred in the 1983 musical “Tango Argentino” and brought tango and milonga to audiences around the world.
