Jorge Fernando Castro, the Argentine former professional boxer known as Roña, died October 14, 2026, aged 59.

Born in Caleta Olivia, he competed professionally from 1987 to 2007 and held the World Boxing Association middleweight title from 1994 to 1995. His second defense of the championship, against John David Jackson in 1994, became the bout for which he was best known.

Castro’s route into professional boxing was interrupted in 1985, when a bicycle accident left him so badly injured that doctors told him he would never be able to fight professionally. He recovered and made his professional debut in 1987, going on to build a two-decade career in the ring. In December 1991, he challenged Terry Norris for the World Boxing Council super welterweight title at Palais Omnisports in Bercy, France, losing by a wide unanimous decision. Reports before that fight said Castro had done roadwork for the first time in his life. His reign as WBA middleweight champion followed three years later, with the Jackson bout coming in his second defense of the title. Castro died in Morón, Buenos Aires Province, according to the biographical account.
