More about Gamal Nkrumah
Gamal Nkrumah, a Ghanaian journalist and editor at Al-Ahram Weekly, died October 14, 2026, aged 68.
Also known as Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, he was born in Accra on January 1, 1959, to Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, and Fathia Nkrumah, who was Egyptian. He was their eldest son and the brother of Samia Nkrumah, a Ghanaian politician.
A Pan-Africanist, Nkrumah built a career in journalism, editing and writing, with much of his professional life connected to Al-Ahram Weekly in Cairo. He worked for the newspaper as a political journalist for more than 15 years before becoming editor of its international affairs section. His career there thus brought together political reporting and editorial work on international affairs at the same publication. Nkrumah earned a doctorate in political science from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. His academic training in London and his long professional association with the Cairo newspaper formed the principal settings of his work. He was identified as Ghanaian and Egyptian, reflecting the two national connections in his family background. Across his roles as journalist, editor and writer, his work was associated with political coverage and Pan-Africanism. His time at Al-Ahram Weekly included both reporting and responsibility for the international affairs section, after years covering politics as a journalist.
