Piero Antonio Franco De Benedictis, the Italian-born Argentine singer-songwriter known professionally as Piero, died on October 7, 2026, aged 81.
Born in Gallipoli, in Italy’s Apulia region, he moved with his family to Argentina in 1948, when he was three. He began his professional singing career in 1964 and became widely known across Latin America for songs including “Mi viejo,” “Pedro Nadie” and “Para el pueblo lo que es del pueblo.” During the 1970s, his work became associated with protest song and socially conscious music.
Following Argentina’s 1976 coup, Piero left the country and spent several years in exile in Spain, returning in 1981. He later developed a close connection with Colombia, where he received citizenship in 1994 and took part in peace and humanitarian initiatives. His career also brought recognition from the Latin Recording Academy, which presented him with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. His best-known songs and his work in socially engaged music made him a familiar figure to audiences across Latin America.
