Lutz von Padberg, a German historian whose work focused on medieval history and the Christianization of the Germanic peoples, died on July 16, 2026.

Born in Essen on February 22, 1950, he became known as an authority on Saint Boniface, writing biographies of the missionary and studies of his veneration. Von Padberg received his doctorate from the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster in 1980 and completed his habilitation at the University of Paderborn in 1993.

He taught at Paderborn as a Privatdozent until 1999, then served as a professor of medieval history there. He also taught as a visiting professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven from 1986 to 1999. His early publications addressed theology and feminism, and he went on to publish extensively on Anglo-Saxon and other missionaries.
