Born in Falmouth, Cornwall, he made more than 600 appearances in the Premier League and Football League as a goalkeeper, having started out with Falmouth Town and Newquay before moving into the professional game. Over an 18-year career, he played for Exeter City, Birmingham City, Crystal Palace, Barnsley and Bristol Rovers, with a loan spell at Derby County, and spent three seasons at Watford, where he was twice named Player of the Season.
