Griselda Gambaro, the Argentine playwright and writer whose work examined political violence in her country, died on September 15, 2026, aged 98.
Born in Buenos Aires on July 24, 1928, she wrote novels, plays, short stories, essays and books for teenagers that often returned to the subject of the desaparecidos and efforts to recover and memorialize them. Her novel Ganarse la muerte was banned by the government because of its political message.
Gambaro was also awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1982. She died in Buenos Aires, two months after her husband, the sculptor Juan Carlos Distéfano.
