Giulio Lepschy, an Italian linguist and academic, died on February 8, 2026, aged 91.

Born in Venice in 1935, he studied at the University of Pisa and the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa before conducting research at several European universities. He joined the University of Reading as a lecturer in 1964, became a reader in 1967 and professor of Italian in 1975, a post he held full time until 1997 before continuing part time.

He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1987, admitted to the Accademia della Crusca in 1991 and received its Serena Medal in 2000.

Giulio Ciro Lepschy (IPA: [ˈdʒuːljo ˈtʃiːro ˈlɛpski]; 14 January 1935 – 8 February 2026) was an Italian linguist and academic. He was Professor of Italian at the University of Reading from 1975 to 1997.
