Born David Eric Allan in Tidworth, Wiltshire, England, on March 8, 1940, he moved with his family to Canada at age 15 and returned to Britain at 18 to pursue acting. His first film role came in Peter Brook’s 1968 film Tell Me Lies, based on the play US, in which he had appeared the previous year.
