Gary Edward Wagner was born June 28, 1940, and was a native of Bridgeport, Illinois. He graduated from Bridgeport High School and attended Eastern Illinois University before signing with the Phillies in 1962.
He made his major league debut in 1965 after three years in the Philadelphia farm system and played in MLB from 1965 to 1970. Primarily a relief pitcher, Wagner appeared in 162 games, with four starts, and had his busiest season in 1965, when he made 59 appearances and recorded seven saves.
