Elof Axel Carlson American geneticist dead at age 94

Elof Axel Carlson, an American geneticist and historian of science, died on December 17, 2025, at age 94.

He was a distinguished teaching professor emeritus at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Born in New York City in 1931, Carlson earned a B.A.

from New York University in 1953 and a PhD in zoology from Indiana University Bloomington in 1958, where he studied under Hermann Joseph Muller. He was a past recipient of the E. Harris Harbison Award for excellence in teaching from the Danforth Foundation. Carlson also served as a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota, San Diego State University and Tougaloo College, and was a McMurrin Visiting Professor at the University of Utah. He taught on several voyages of Semester at Sea.
